What follows is a description of a performance review and development training course. As part of the programme a "benefit selling" approach can be taken to inform sponsors and/or mentors.

A thorough appreciation of the client company's culture, background, current status and future objectives is essential prior to any course, together with an understanding of their HR development methods and systems employed. In this way performance appraisal training can promote organisational context and better understanding of its application.

The following course option provides a focus on:

  • the philosophy of performance appraisal and performance review and development processes
  • the fundamental appraisal principles
  • preparation by both the manager and employee
  • discussion and questioning areas in relation to past performance and future progress and development
  • agreement of future targets and objectives and development needs
  • conduct of the performance appraisal interview with emphasis on questioning and control, structure, personal skills and styles, environment and atmosphere
  • if appropriate an outline of the performance appraisal or PRD system you operate or are introducing
  • the role of coaching, mentoring and personal development portfolios in the performance appraisal and improvement process
  • how modern performance appraisal systems, when linked with development, impact on corporate culture and productivity

The course starts by reviewing what performance appraisal is, what it is not and how performance review and development (PRD) is different. Reasons why performance review and development is needed and benefits accruing will be examined, thereby establishing its importance and placing performance review and development into a strategic organisational context. This is enhanced by looking at performance review and development aims, the role of standards and competencies, how performance links to behaviour, attitude and compliance with corporate systems, e.g. procedures, policies and regulations as well as job knowledge and skills.

These considerations are placed into context by connecting to both individual and organisational development constraints and requirements. As a result it will be demonstrated how performance review and development systems, (supported by personal development portfolios and mentoring), delivers realistic objectives designed to enhance skills, drive change and develop the organisation.

The course moves through sessions entitled, setting the scene, planning and preparation, the performance appraisal review, and personal development action planning.

Courses can conclude with an organisational postscript to place the performance review and development process into an organisational context by looking at strategic issues, particularly driving forces, that may be affecting the organisation and its culture. In this way performance appraisal can be key in creating a learning culture.
